Read articleMatch.com has released its 7th annual Singles in America survey results, and with it come some surprising (and maybe not-so-surprising) insights into how potential dates feel about smartphones and social media.
According to the results, one of the biggest tech-related turn-ons for singles is (of all things) Netflix binges. And we say ‘Netflix and chill,’ we mean it literally: Millennials are 270% more likely than Boomers and Gen X’ers to be turned on by people who binge the same shows that they do. Conversely, about half of singles see constant social media use and Facebook rants as turn-offs.
Additionally, even your choice of smartphone may actually affect your date. iPhone users are 21 times more likely to judge someone negatively for using an Android phone, while Android users are 15 times more likely to judge iPhone users. The survey doesn’t answer why people feel this way; maybe smartphone elitism is more important to people than originally thought.
On the other hand, it should be no shock to anyone that taking a phone call during a date is a big no-no; 75% of singles surveyed agree. Texting and leaving your phone on the table are bad ideas too, according to over half of the people surveyed. In fact, 45% of singles believe that the best option is to keep your phone off and in your pocket.
Lastly, it might be time to finally replace that broken phone screen you swore you’d look into months ago. The far majority of women surveyed (86%) felt that they are more likely to judge their date negatively if he has a phone with a cracked screen.
Match.com’s Singles in America report is based on the results of 5,500 singles surveyed and is run by Dr. Helen Fisher and Dr. Justin Garcia.
