Read articleSimone Biles put an exclamation mark on her performance yesterday as she grabbed another gold in the women’s vault event. This medal brings her total to three gold medals for the 2016 Olympics.
Not only did she win, but she did so convincingly as she averaged a score of 15.966, which was several percentage points over second place. Biles has two more events left in the Olympics, and if she wins, she will put herself in the same conversation as Michael Phelps, who brought in 5 gold medals this year.
Biles was not the only woman dominating the competition this weekend; weightlifter Sarah Robles thrusted herself into American Olympic history by becoming the first women from the U.S. to earn a medal in weightlifting since the event was introduced 16 years ago. Robles competed in the +75kg (165 pounds). For the entire competition, Robles lifted a total of 286kg (630 pounds) in route to her bronze medal.
This weekend there were also a few disappointments as well, the most surprising of which was the women’s soccer team, who lost in penalty kicks to Sweden. This was the team’s first loss since 2000 in Sydney. In track and field, both Kendell Williams and Barbara Nwaba failed to medal in the women’s heptathlon and in gymnastics, Gabby Douglas fell to 7th place in the women’s uneven bars.
