Yesterday it was Simone Manuel setting an Olympic record in the women’s 100m freestyle final. Not only did she break a record, she also became the first black female swimmer to win an Olympic gold medal in a individual event. On a larger scale, an American had not won the 100m freestyle event since 1984.
Manuel did not have have an easy path to victory on Thursday, midway through the race she was in third place and ultimately tied with Penny Oleksiak for first place.
Outside of the pool, Simone Biles stole the show, when she won the women’s individual all-around gymnastics event. This is her second medal of Rio, her first was a gold in women’s team all-around. She was swiftly followed my her teammate Aly Raisman who landed a silver medal. The women’s gymnastics team is just getting started collecting medals, being that there are several upcoming events over the weekend.
