Read articleIt’s hard to fathom that it has been 40 years since the death of Bruce Lee, as his influence still looms large over martial arts and popular culture. The manner in which the Enter the Dragon star led his life and comported himself still resonates with his millions of fans around the world.
In our retrospective, Bruce Lee’s Life in Pictures, one of his quotes on how to approach life leaps from the screen: “If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them.”
Lee was born in San Francisco on November 27, 1940, but he was brought up in Hong Kong, and it is there that a major exhibition is taking place to commemorate his life at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum. Lee’s daughter Shannon is the chair of the Bruce Lee foundation, and according the Reuters, the foundation has donated a considerable amount of things to the some 600 items on view. The exhibition, which is called Bruce Lee: Kung Fu. Art. Life, will continue for five years.
“I remember his energy, just sort of amazing presence when you were sort of caught in his attention and I really hold that true to my heart,” she said asked what she remembered most from her father (when he died she was four), according to the news agency.
No matter how the founder of Jeet Kune Do inspired you, whether it was to take up marital arts, hit the gym harder or grow a love of martial arts movies, the 40th anniversary of his death this July 20 is as good a time as any to celebrate the life of the one and only, Bruce Lee.
